We still have several months before 2018 comes to a close, but it's not too early to acknowledge the terrifying films that have already made their way to the big screen this year.

A Quiet Place



There wasn't a social media platform around that avoided the buzz about this fascinating movie. Set in a world where mysterious creatures have invaded and begun to hunt by sound, A Quiet Place follows the eventful night of one family living in fear and trying to survive under impossible circumstances. You'll laugh, cry and shudder your way through this one-of-a-kind horror flick. I was sweating and cringing the entire time I watched John Krasinski's nightmarish creation. 

Annihilation



When I walked in to see this film, I had no idea I was in for a hallucinogenic ride through a nerve-wracking alternate dimension. At first, the film seems to be more of a sci-fi adventure, but you'll quickly realize that it's much darker than it initially appears. You'll be exhausted by the time you finish anxiously watching Natalie Portman trek through a dangerous world full of terrors. 

Hereditary 



You've probably heard people dub this movie as utterly disturbing, which is partially why it's on this list. Hereditary is also currently one of the best-reviewed films of the year, so if you consider yourself a horror movie fan, you'd better find out what all the fuss is about. Warning: you're sure to be uncomfortable as you witness this haunting tale of family secrets and trauma. 

The Ritual 



The concept of four college guys hiking through the wilderness isn't exactly unique, but what happens to them is. The Ritual follows the young men as they attempt to escape an ancient evil that stalks them through the forests of Scandinavia. Oh, and good news: the film is a Netflix Original, so you can stream it at the click of a button. Schedule a little time this weekend to find out exactly what this unseen threat is and how the men can survive it. 

Upgrade 



When Grey Trace was mugged and paralyzed, he never expected to live a full life again. That's why he agreed to become the lab rat for a billionaire's impossible invention. A form of artificial intelligence is implanted in his body, which gives him super strength and agility. The only problem? That AI isn't as simple as it seems. Fresh and original, this sci-fi turned horror movie will satisfy your craving for smart thrills.

The Endless 



Looking for something a bit bizarre? Check out The Endless, a film about two brothers who thought they'd escaped the insane cult they left ten years ago. When they receive a cryptic video message that asks them to revisit the group, they are forced to evaluate impossible truths and untangle themselves from the cult's sticky web. Buckle up for this one; it's a wild ride.
