Combination Sculpture by Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin anchors Courtyard by Marriott Hotel and Midlothian Conference Center

 
 
A grand opening event celebrating the new Courtyard by Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Midlothian, Texas featured the lighting of an original sculpture commissioned to commemorate Midlothian’s spirit of cooperation.
 
“This project was a collaboration among the Midlothian Economic Development, Midlothian Community Development Corporation, Gatehouse Capital and Brad Oldham Sculpture,” said Marty Collins, CEO of Gatehouse. “We are pleased to add the first hotel and a landmark piece to the City of Midlothian which will attract more visitors to the area.”
 
The event began with a dedication of the 30-foot-tall steel and concrete sculpture entitled, Combination, comprised of materials representing the industry in Midlothian. Symbolizing two iron nails that were bent and forged together, the sculpture depicts Midlothian’s collaborative strength that has built a strong community. At the base of the massive sculpture is “Joe,” a three-foot-tall bronze sculpture, positioned as if he is directing work. “Joe” represents the driving force behind Midlothian’s success.
 
“Combination is a wonderful piece, partly because it represents the spirit of Midlothian working together and because the piece itself consists of materials actually made in the city,” said artist Brad Oldham. “My hope is that Combination can create a space for people to be a part of, and to make their own for generations to come.”
 
After dedicating the sculpture, guests were invited to a reception in the Courtyard by Marriott lobby. The Midlothian High School Jazz Band entertained guests as they enjoyed a variety of flatbread pizzas and hors d’ouevres.
 
The new four-story, 102-room Marriott Courtyard hotel features Marriott’s new room design with hybrid zones for working, sleeping, relaxing and getting ready. The hotel offers more than 1,200 square feet of meeting space and access to the adjoining 39,000 square foot Midlothian Conference Center.

The event spilled over to the ballroom of the Midlothian Conference Center.  Guests enjoyed delicious fare from Midlothian restaurants including: sushi from the Rising Star Hibachi Grill; stuffed mushrooms, pasta and antipasta by Villa Italiana; brisket sliders from Ellis BBQ; oven-roasted tenderloin from My Sister’s Affair; and frozen treats by Frost 321.

Country music band Shenandoah headlined the evening’s entertainment. Founded in 1984 by Marty Raybon, Shenandoah has charted 26 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including the number one hits “The Church on Cumberland Road,” “Sunday in the South,” and “Two Dozen Roses.” The single “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart,” featuring guest vocals by Allison Krauss, won the artists a Grammy Award for “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.”
