Cassaro Winery and Vineyard Hosts “True Crime and Wine”
North Texas’ Cassaro Winery and Vineyard is hosting “True Crime and Wine”, a tasting series for wine-loving murderinos that combines Cassaro’s award-winning Texas vintages with in-depth explorations and interactive profiling of notorious crimes. The series is inspired and hosted by John Matthews’, co-founder of Cassaro, and draws on his experience with serial killers and mass shooters over a nearly four-decade career in law enforcement.
Cassaro’s “True Crime and Wine” nights are a unique winery experience that pair two of America’s current passions, good wine and true crime. Guests have an opportunity to walk with John as he profiles serial killers and discusses the nexus between wine and crime, and the response has been overwhelming.
“I planned on doing one presentation about ‘The Eyeball Killer’, and it’s now turned into an entire series that has sold out nine consecutive sessions since November,” Matthews said. “The only thing as passionate as a wine aficionado could be a true crime love. This marriage of those two loves is an experience you can’t find in Napa, Sonoma, Fredericksburg or anywhere in this country.”
Sessions include “A Cup of Murder”, which explores a serial killer who used wine as a weapon to murder her enemies before making soap with their remains, as well as Matthews’ own “The Eyeball Killer”. In his first-hand account, Matthews tells of the terrifying crime spree of Dallas’ Charles Albright, a seemingly charming and devoted husband, teacher, and coach that killed and mutilated several prostitutes, cutting out their eyes for grisly trophies.
The series is sold out for April and will now run every second Sunday beginning in May. Companies and groups can also reserve dates during the week to offer private events for their employees, customers, or guests.
A celebrated cop, author, John is also an award-winning winemaker and writer. He has authored and co-authored seven books, including: “The Eyeball Killer”, “Police Perspective: Life on the Beat”, “Mass Shootings: Six Steps to Survival”, “School Safety 101”, “Creating A Safer School” and “Neighborhood Watch 101”. His debut work that he co-authored, “The Eyeball Killer”, is currently being developed into a feature film called “Eyes of Jefferson”.
